Fourth Graders From Kent Heights Tour State House

The students got to look at the Royal Charter of 1663, which gave Rhode Islanders colonists freedom of religion and governance.

Secretary of State A. Ralph Mollis and state Rep. Roberto DaSilva (D-East Providence, Pawtucket) recently welcomed students from to the State House.

Mollis' office gave the students a backstage tour that included a stop at the Bell Area, where Rhode Island's replica of the Philadelphia Liberty Bell is on display; the State Room, where Gilbert Stuart's famous portrait of George Washington hangs; and Rotunda, where they got the rare opportunity to sit on the stairs and look up at one of the largest unsupported domes in the world. The Secretary of State's office offers free State House tours Monday through Friday. (Text provided by a spokesman for Mollis).
