Get Rid of Your Hazardous Waste on Saturday

The City of East Providence in conjunction with the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation will be collecting hazardous waste at 60 Commercial Way.

What do fluorescent light bulbs, pesticides and pool chemicals have in common? All three, along with many other unexpected materials, are banned from landfills at risk that they may harm the environment.

This Saturday, the City of East Providence in conjunction with the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation will be collecting hazardous waste at 60 Commercial Way, home to the city's Parks Division offices.

The Resource Recovery Corp. ships non-recyclable materials to special landfills in Ohio and Canada, while other materials are recycled or reused in some way, according to Joe Rotella, special waste manager for the agency.

"Everything gets sent or reused," he said.

The agency encourages East Providence residents to make an appointment and drop off any potential health hazards between 8 am and 1 pm on Saturday. A complete list of hazardous waste materials can be found here.
