Obituary: Edmundo Dias Mateus, 92

Edmundo Dias Mateus, 92, of Rice Avenue, died July 3, 2015 at home with his loving family by his side. He was the husband of the late Helena (Diogo) Mateus. They were married for 61 years. He was born in Mosteiros, Sao Miguel, Azores, on March 9, 1923, the son of the late Jose Dias Mateus and Maria C. Soares.

He worked as a baker’s helper at RI Hospital retiring in 1978. He served with the Portuguese Army twice.

He is survived by his daughter and her husband Delva and Valdemar Valerio with whom he lived for 23 years in East Providence and his son and his wife Luis and Alzira Mateus of Seekonk. He is survived by his grandchildren Lori, Jeffrey, Monica and Stacey and 1 great grand daughter Siena. He leaves his brother Luis Mateus of Canada. He was the brother of the late Manuel Mateus, Jose Soares Mateus, Francisco Mateus, Hermano Mateus, Basilisia Dias and Maria Julia Ponte.

His funeral will begin on Wednesday at 9am from the Rebello Funeral Home and Crematory, 901 Broadway, East Providence, RI. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10am in St. Francis Xavier Church, N. Carpenter St., East Providence. Burial will be in Gate of Heaven Cemetery. Calling hours will be held Tuesday 5-8pm.
