Obituary: Gloria Costa, 97

Gloria (Melo) Costa, 97, of East Providence passed away peacefully with her loving family by her side on Saturday, May 23, 2015 at the Chestnut Terrace Nursing Home. She was the beloved wife of the late Manuel S. DaCosta for over 50 years.

She was the daughter of the late Lucindo and Maria (Pimentel) Melo. Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, on November 25, 1917. Mrs. Costa came to the United States in 1966 looking for better opportunities for her family. She worked in the cafeteria at St. Joseph’s Hospital for many years before retiring in the early 1980’s.

Mrs. Costa was very religious and was an active communicant at St. Francis Xavier Church. She enjoyed reading the bible and praying her rosary beads on a daily basis. Her hobbies included sewing and knitting, she made her children and grandchildren numerous blankets over the years and she also enjoyed growing her own grapes and making Portuguese wine. She loved her family and cherished the time she spent with them.

She leaves behind three children, Estrela Botelho and her husband Mariano of East Providence, Eduarda Amaral of Seekonk and Jorge Costa and his wife Sophie of East Providence; her 7 grandchildren, Elena, Nina and her husband Jason, Victor, Tracy and her husband Robert, Christina and her husband Brian, Lori and Sirena; and her 9 great-grandchildren, Kayla, Alexander, Ryan, Alexandra, Nathan, Ava, Jack, Owen and Mason.

She was also the sister of Adriana Lameiro of East Providence, Inorinda Pimentel of Canada and Carmina Pimentel of Sao Miguel, Azores. She was the sister of the late Lucindo Melo, Albano Melo and Lauriana Raposo.

Her calling hours and funeral will all take place on Thursday from 8:30am – 9:30am at Rebello Funeral Home and Crematory, 901 Broadway, East Providence, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Francis Xavier Church, 81 North Carpenter Street, East Providence. Burial will follow at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery.
