Recreational Marijuana in RI? 'No' Say AG & Other Leaders

PROVIDENCE, RI—Medical marijuana is already legal in the state. On Smith Hill, many Rhode Island political leaders now seem to be leaning toward legalizing recreational marijuna, as well.

But not everyone thinks that would be a good idea.

State Atty. Gen. Peter Kilmartin is not on board with legalizing recreational marijuana, either. Tomorrow, he and other leaders will announce a united effort to stop the legalization.

"With growing pressure by special interests to push forward with the legalization of recreational marijuana in Rhode Island," his office said, Kilmartin, "in partnership with Smart Approaches to Marijuana (SAM), the Ocean State Prevention Alliance, and What’s the Rush, RI, will host a press conference to hear from individuals and organizations who recognize that legalization of recreational marijuana is fraught with public health and public safety problems and is the wrong direction for the State of Rhode Island."

They'll meet on Thursday at 11.

"Speakers at the press conference will include representatives from the medical community, municipal leaders, the prevention and recovery communities, law enforcement, the business community, and others who are united in their opposition to the legalization of recreational marijuana in Rhode Island.

"During the press conference SAM will unveil a public awareness campaign on the myriad of issues with legalization of recreational marijuana," his office said.
