April 2, 2014 [Providence] - The Rhode Island State Nurses Association (RISNA) is excited to honor four champions of nursing at its Legislative Awards Reception on May 7 at the Providence Marriott Downtown. Awardees will include Senator Christopher Scott Ottiano; Representative David Bennett; Jim Carney, President of the Rhode Island Academy of Physician Assistants; and Maureen Glynn, former Assistant Attorney General. Honorees will be recognized for their advocacy and support of legislation which has advanced the profession of nursing in Rhode Island.
Senator Ottiano and Representative Bennett will receive the Legislative Award. Both men have careers in healthcare and serve on the health committees in their respective chambers. Senator Ottiano is a physician at the Brain & Spine Neurosurgical Institute in Johnston and Representative Bennett is a registered nurse at Butler Hospital in Providence. They have been vocal supporters in Rhode Island government, most recently aiding the passage of 2013-H 5656A/2013-S 614A, a bill ensuring that advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) are able to practice to the full extent of their education.
Jim Carney and Maureen Glynn will receive the Advocacy Award, reserved for non-nurses who advocate on behalf of the profession. Mr. Carney, in his role as President of the Rhode Island Academy of Physician Assistants, has used his position to support partner organizations including RISNA. Ms. Glynn is an attorney, consultant, and former Assistant Attorney General who has been actively involved in end-of-life care legislation since her tenure in public office.
