Steve McDonald To be Honored With Ben Mondor Award

The radio personality will be the first recipient of the award.

Radio personality and East Providence resident Steve McDonald has been chosen as the first recipient of the Ben Mondor Award.

The award will be presented to McDonald at the fifth annual Cox RI Sports Awards on June 15, according to a news release.

McDonald is a longtime baseball and basketball coach who can be heard on the "Paul and Al Show" on WHJY and "The Helen Glover Show" on WHJJ. He also covers football and basketball at the University of Rhode Island.

McDonald was friends with Mondor, the legendary owner of the Pawtucket Red Sox, who died last year at age 85.

“Ben Mondor had a special affection for Steve McDonald and the two were very close over the years,” PawSox president Mike Tamburro said in the news release. “Steve has all the characteristics that Ben embodied…always generous, compassionate, humorous, and most of all – forever willing to give back so much of themselves for the community that they loved.”

McDonald will receive the award at the event. Rhode Island's best spring scholar-athletes will also be named during the event, and .
