Want to Stop the Barking? Try Some Bach.

The East Providence Animal Control Center has been using a new strategy to soothe the stressed animals it takes in: classical music.

Maybe they've been mistreated. Or maybe they miss their previous owners. And now they're in a cage, surrounded by strange new animals.

Animal control supervisor William Muggle did some research and learned that classical sounds, as opposed to other types of music, can help soothe that stress. So in December, Muggle, a music lover himself, downloaded some classical music from his MP3 player, burned some CDs and with center staff, set up some boom boxes in strategic locations around the center.

So far, he says, it seems to be working. The cats and dogs housed at the shelter seem less stressed. There's less barking from dogs who have been there a while. Even the intern, a rap fan, is getting used to the strains of classical music around the shelter.
