HOPKINTON, RI — A drunken Charlestown driver swerved at an officer of the law who was forced to "take evasive action to avoid being hit," police said.
Jay Grindle, 51, was charged with felony assault with a dangerous weapon driving under the influence in connection with the Thursday incident, the Hopkinton Police Department said in a media release.
Grindle was "observed operating his vehicle recklessly within (a) construction area, including striking and knocking over traffic cones," the release said.
"When officers signaled the driver to slow down, he swerved toward one of them, forcing the officer to take evasive action to avoid being hit," according to the release.
A patrol officer later tracked Grindle down to the parking lot of a business on Main Street in Ashaway, the release said.
