Today's riddle: What is clean when it is black and dirty when it is white? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Jamestown Backs Free Fort Getty Trailer Parking Pilot (upriseri.com) — Jamestown's Town Council has backed a pilot to give commercial boat haulers with Fort Getty Pier permits up to five free trailer parking spots, while new rules are refined. Councilors also accepted a major paving grant, advanced a trash contract reassignment, sought to shift $2.5 million in federal funds to a sewer plant upgrade, and scheduled a November 2 zoning hearing on a possible fire or police substation.
2. Jamestown Asks EPA to Shift $2.5M to Sewer Plant Upgrade (upriseri.com) — Jamestown's Town Council has voted to ask the EPA to redirect about $2.5 million in federal funding from a long-delayed North Road water main to an equipment-only upgrade of the town's sewer treatment plant. The move aims to speed federal historic review by avoiding excavation, while the town pursues state-level permitting for the water main through Rhode Island agencies.
3. Narragansett, Jamestown schools consider sharing superintendent (turnto10.com) — Jamestown families should know that their school committee is weighing a plan to share a superintendent with Narragansett as both districts face declining enrollment, potentially saving about $90,000 a year. The proposal would keep Jamestown's own school committee, budget, and principals, with no expected day-to-day changes for students, and will be discussed by the Jamestown School Committee on Thursday.
4. Cold Case Arrest of 1985 Newport Murder (newportthisweek.com) — Jamestown readers may feel some closure as an arrest has been made in the 1985 killing of 22-year-old Jamestown resident Hillary Hellewell, whose body was found in Newport. State and Newport officials say a 61-year-old man is now charged with first-degree murder in the long-running cold case and is being held without bail.
5. North Kingstown Panel Backs Wickford Middle School Fields (upriseri.com) — North Kingstown's budget advisory panel is urging the School Committee to fully fund athletic fields for the new Wickford Middle School while handling high school tennis court replacement through capital planning. For Jamestown residents, the decision matters because North Kingstown teams are currently relying on courts provided under an agreement with the Jamestown School Department while repairs are planned.
