Johnston Man Charged with DUI Twice in 10 Days

Police said Michael Vizzacco, 45, crashed into a state police cruiser 10 days ago and was caught driving drunk Thursday night.

A 45-year-old Johnston man is facing charges of driving under the influence for a second time in 10 days after he was stopped on Route 146 in North Smithfield Thursday afternoon, the Rhode Island State Police said in a statement.

Michael Vizzacco, of 4 Hopkins Ave., Johnston, was pulled over for erratic driving at around 5:30 p.m. after police got multiple 911 calls from concerned motorists.

Vizzacco failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody where he refused a breathalyzer test at the Lincoln Woods Barracks, said Rhode Island State Police Superintendent Col. Steven G. O’Donnell.

Police said on June 1, Vizzacco struck an occupied and marked state police cruiser on Route 295 in Smithfield. The cruiser was parked in the breakdown lane with its emergency lights activated. In that incident, he failed a field sobriety test and charged with driving under the influence and refusing a chemical test.

The trooper suffered minor injuries and was treated at Rhode Island Hospital and later released.

For the most-recent incident, Vizzacco is being charged with driving under the influence and refusing a chemical test once again.

He was arraigned in Third Division District Court before and is being held as a bail violator. He is due to appear in court on June 25 for a pretrial conference.

Police remind drivers that they should call 911 of *77 on their cellular phones if they see dangerous drivers or hazardous roadway conditions.
