RI Man Dies After Jumping In Dumpster For Shelter: Police

Police said a recycling worker was unaware Roberto Vazquez, of Providence, was in a dumpster as it was emptied into a truck.

JOHNSTON, RI — Rhode Island State Police have released the identity of the man found dead at a Johnston recycling center on Thursday morning. The death of Roberto Vazquez, 61, of Valley Street in Providence, is believed to have been accidental.

State Police Major Timothy Sanzi said Friday afternoon that Vazquez is believed to have died after seeking shelter in a dumpster filled with cardboard at a Cranston fast-food restaurant on Wednesday night. On Thursday morning, a recycling truck came to empty the dumpster, with the driver completely unaware that anyone was inside.

Vazquez's body was found when the driver arrived at Full Cycle Recycling around 10:30 a.m.

Major Sanzi said there were no signs of foul play and Vazquez's cause of death does not appear to be suspicious. An autopsy has been performed. The results have not yet been released, pending the results of toxicology tests.
