All the Vineyard's a Stage

Newport Vineyard and the Rhode Island Shakespeare Company introduce outdoor summer theater among the vines with "Taming of the Shrew." The company's final performance is tonight, Saturday, Aug. 7 2010. Tickets are still available.

We have all heard of Shakespeare in the park; such performances are an annual summer treat for theater lovers.  Friday night, more than 100 people--and at least one dog--had the unique experience of enjoying Shakespeare in the vineyard, with acres of gently sloping grapevines as the backdrop and a setting sun as the dimming house lights.  The setting seems particularly suited for Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew", which takes place in Italy, home to some of the oldest wine-producing regions in the world.

Like many of Shakespeare's comedies, "The Taming of the Shrew" involves a love triangle or two, lots of innuendo, and of course some instances of mistaken identity.  Laughter erupted frequently in the vineyard field as the audience followed the story of Katherine, a woman noted for her scolding tongue and brash temper, and her suitor, Petruchio, a coarse, ill-mannered man more interested in her father's wealth than Katherine herself.  Rhode Island Shakespeare Company puts on an engaging performance, having fun with costuming and reveling in the physical comedy the play requires.

If you missed Friday's performance, tickets for Saturday's 7pm show are still available; reserve yours by calling (401)848-5161 or emailing info@newportvineyards.com.  The grounds open at 6pm and organizers suggest arriving early to picnic amidst a beautiful setting and claim your plot of grass for the show.  The seating is "bring your lawn chairs and blankets."
