Middletown Fire House Rings In Fire Prevention Month

The Middletown Fire Department opened it doors to the public on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011 for its annual Open House. Celebrating and promoting Fire Prevention Month, firefighters from the MFD were on hand to teach the public the importance of fire prevention.  

The event was free and open to the public from 2 to 6 p.m. Adults and children alike were treated to a hands-on opportunity to touch, see and hear the firefighting apparatus and rescue equipment.

Participants could try on a firefighter's full uniform, go through a smoke-filled simulator, get behind the wheel of the hook-and-ladder and take a fire prevention quiz to see how much they learned in the process. 

Volunteers gave out coloring books, pens, pencils and black or red fire hats while Sparky the fire dog rode around in his mechanical fire truck.

According to Middletown Fire Chief Ronald Doire, "It's been busy since we opened our doors at two o'clock. This is a great opportunity for the firefighters to share what they do with the public and teach what might be a lifesaving lesson or two in the process."
