Awards Night, Shadow Day, Pep Rally, Parents Night Out and More

So much happens in our schools every day, it can be hard to keep up. Here's what's happening at Middletown schools this week:

General Announcements

Planetarium Family Fun Night will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Krupowicz Planetarium at Attendees will enjoy the Oasis in Space Full Dome Show which takes the audience on a voyage through the universe in search of liquid water. Tickets are $3 per person or $2 for those 8 and younger. No one under the age of 4 will be admitted. Space is limited to 60 people and is on a first come first served basis. Gaudet Middle School will host the next community Zumba class on Wednesday, Feb. 16 at 6 p.m. and every Wednesday through Wednesday, March 9. The program is open to the public ages 18 and older. The classes are taught by Johanna Lovelace. The cost is $20 for the four-week session or $7 per drop-in. For more information, contact Carmela Greer at 418-0071 or cgeer@mpsri.net.
A public schools budget workshop is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. in the . The meeting is open to all.
The School Committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, Feb. 17 at 7 p.m in the Oliphant Administration Building. The meeting is open to the public.

The MHS Naval War College International Officers Speaker Series will hold a lecture on Monday, Feb. 14 at 9:50 a.m. in Room 212 featuring officers from Kazakhstan and Germany. The series is open to the MHS community.
MHS Shadowing Days will be held for incoming grade 9 students on Tuesday, Feb. 15 and Wednesday, Feb. 16. The program allows grade 8 students from GMS to visit the high school and follow a full day schedule with an MHS student mentor assigned to help the incoming students transition to the high school.
MHS will hold 90-Minute Mentors and 90-Minute Café sessions on Tuesday, Feb. 15 and Thursday, Feb. 17 from 1:45 to 3:15 p.m. to prepare for mid-terms and work on homework. The sessions are free and open to all MHS students. Adult volunteers to monitor the program are wanted. For more information, contact Carmela Geer at cgeer@mpsri.net or 418-0071.
The MHS Site Council will meet on Thursday, Feb. 17 from 2:30 to 4 p.m. in Room 6. All parents, teachers and students of MHS are welcome to attend.

The GMS “I Have a Dream” Essay Contest will hold its ceremony on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 5:30 p.m. at book store.
The GMS Academic Recognition Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at Barnes & Noble. The first session will be at 6 p.m. for grade 7 and 8 students, and the second session will be at 6:30 p.m. for grades 5 and 6.
The GMS Winter Pep Rally will be held in the GMS Gymnasium on Friday, Feb. 18 at 12:40 p.m. The event is sponsored by the GMS Student Council and is for GMS students only.

The Forest Avenue School Improvement Team will meet at 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 16 in the Forest Avenue Library. All teachers and parents of Forest Avenue School students are welcome to attend.
The Forest Avenue School PTG will host a Parents Night Out on Friday, Feb. 18 from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Forest Avenue School students can be dropped off for an evening of fun activities and dinner. The cost is $10 per child.

Sports

The MHS girls varsity basketball team will play against Bishop Keough on Tuesday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m.
The boys basketball team will play the St. Michael’s School Blue Team at 3:15 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 17 at The Hut.
The MHS boys varsity ice hockey team will play against the Rogers/Tiverton/Rocky co-op on Saturday, Feb. 19 at 8:30 p.m. at the St. George’s School ice rink.
