Bites Nearby: Since 1940, Middletown's Newport Creamery Is Right At Home

How about some good mood food?

The Newport Creamery in Middletown has been at the same location since 1940.

Started by the Rector family as a milk bar in 1928, it evolved into an ice cream parlor, and eventually expanded into a full fledged family restaurant with ample portions and reasonable prices. The atmosphere is friendly. To make you feel at home, you can leave your favorite mug there ready for your morning coffee.

Famous for their Awful Awfuls, introduced in 1959, a thick rich shake that is a blend of flavored syrup, milk, and a secret frozen ice milk mix, if you can drink three you get one free. You can take home half gallons of their award-winning ice cream, frozen yogurt or their delicious Jimmy Rolls.

A new menu has just been introduced featuring a Healthy Eating section. For example, Cranberry walnut salad with romaine lettuce, grilled chicken, shredded carrots, dried cranberries and walnuts. Served with raspberry vinaigrette, it has 580 calories. The healthy sides are broccoli, vegetable medley and Mandarin oranges.

Children’s and senior menus are also available. Fear not, you can still order your Philly cheese steak or six junior burgers topped with three slices of cheddar cheese, three slices of American cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a bulkie roll.
