The human spirit is amazing! Inspire people with a mission, and they are unstoppable. Deny their requests, undermine their efforts, impede their progress, they will still refuse to be denied even by a virus. That’s the history of the determined Citizens to Explore Unification (CESU).

Since the beginning of this year, CESU has collected signatures in order to overcome the negativity of the members of the Middletown Town Council who refused to even discuss the possibility of improved educational opportunity for the next generation of students in Middletown and Newport, choosing to settle for what they had, in spite of abysmal test scores, deteriorating buildings, and questionable fiscal management.

CESU set a goal to collect the signatures of 10 percent of the registered voters in order to give the people themselves the opportunity on the ballot to make the decision that would have huge implications for their future.

They set up tables across the town, went door-to-door, used a web site, social and print media, and radio interviews to continue the movement. Neither were they defeated by a virus that literally closed down person to person efforts. So they invested in mailers and as the area is opening up again to activity, they are back at their stations, asking for your help. They deserve your help.

Discussion is not commitment. You will get a chance to cast your vote again when the discussion grows into a proposal. But refusing to even consider better opportunities for the children of this community is not characteristic of a responsible democracy.

CESU will keep on collecting signatures until there are enough to get the question on the ballot. They will be in the Anthony’s Seafood Restaurant parking lot on Friday, May 22, from 4 to 7 p.m. and at the Frosty Freez/Pick Pockets parking lot on Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24, from noon to 4 p.m. They need less than 250 more signatures to support their efforts. They will not stop until they reach success.

Commend their passion. Support their efforts. Where would this country be without activists who care enough about the future of their communities and the education of their students to actually get things done?
