Get Out: 5 Can't-Miss Summer Events Around Middletown

A roundup of the best events in and around town the weekend of August 19-21.


  • Where/When:
    Prospect Park on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
    Why Go:
    This first annual event will feature the work of local artists including jewelry and clothing, paintings and drawings, furniture and pottery, and much more. In addition there will be demonstrations, children’s activities, a silent auction, and plenty of food and drink.
    Pricing: Free admission

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, Aug. 20 at 7 p.m.
    Why Go:
    One of the island’s most popular summer fundraisers will take place to benefit the Norman Bird Sanctuary with a theme of "Birds & Blokes: London Calling." Dinner by Blackstone Catering. Music by DJ Butch.
    Pricing:  $125 in advance through Friday; $150 Saturday and at the door.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
    Why Go:
    Learn how to act and dance like an animal with a fun obstacle course and other activities for kids of all ages. There will be a break from activities from 1 to 2 p.m.
    Pricing:  Free

  • Where/When:
    on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, Aug. 19-21 with various sessions available.
    Why Go: This wine and food festival will feature hundreds of exhibitors from the food, beverage and lifestyle industries in addition to demonstrations and visits by celebrity chefs and winemakers.
     Pricing: $55 to $175 depending on tasting session or special event.

  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 12 to 4 p.m.
    Why Go:
    On Saturday, artists will take their canvases out to area spots to create a masterpiece that will be auctioned off to benefit the Newport Art Museum on Sunday. The silent auction will start with a preview and reception on Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. and continue to run from 12 to 3 p.m. on Sunday with select works being chosen for the life auction which kicks off at 4 p.m.
    Pricing:  $10/members; $15/non-members for Saturday reception
