Get Out: Delve into Middletown Police History, Parade with the Irish

The Middletown area has everything from cultural events to learning about new careers on the calendar this weekend.

If you are looking for a new career, want to take in some local history, or want to be Irish (if even only for a day), there are lots of ways to get out in and around Middletown this weekend. Here are some best bets:


  • Where/When: on Sunday, March 13 from 2 to 4 p.m.
    Why Go: The will host unofficial police historian and former Middletown Police Officer Michael Allen as he takes attendees through the history of the Middletown Police Department.
    Pricing: $5 donation requested

  • Where/When:
    on Thursday, March 10 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
    Why Go:
    This informational session is geared towards the adult student interested in going back to school, but who isn’t sure where to start. Meet with advisors, financial aid staff and faculty to discuss programs and future careers.
    Pricing: Free; $20 application fee will be waived for students who apply during this session.

  • Where/When:
    on Friday, March 11 at 8 p.m.
    Why Go:
    A special pre-DVD screening of the documentary by Jennifer LeBeau that follows the making of Simon & Garfunkel’s “Bridge Over Troubled Water.”
    Pricing: $10
  • ST. PATRICK’S DAY PARADE
    Where/When:
    Downtown Newport on Saturday, March 12 at 11 a.m.
    Why Go: If you aren’t already, this is your chance to be Irish for a day when thousands of people descend on downtown Newport to watch marching bands, clowns, and community groups march through town from City Hall to the Fifth Ward.
    Pricing: Free

  • Where/When:
    Saint Barnabus Church on Sunday, March 13 at 4 p.m.
    Why Go: Enjoy music on a Sunday afternoon to benefit the Navy-Marine Corps Relief Society and Newport Navy Choristers. 
    Pricing: $7 for adults; $5 for children and seniors; $18 for families
