Get Out: Earth Day Events, Police Parade 5K, Easter Egg Hunt

Celebrate Earth Day and Easter with one of the many events going on around town this weekend.

Connect with the earth and welcome springtime as celebrations for both Earth Day and Easter Sunday keep both kids and adults hopping all weekend long.


  • Where/When:
    on Friday, April 22 at 11 a.m.
    Why Go: Local author Wendy Taylor will present her picture book “The Flower” about a lonesome flower who finds new friends. Books will be available for purchase and signing. An Earth Day craft will follow along with the opportunity for children to plant sunflower seeds to bring home.

  • Where/When:
    on Friday, April 22 at 6:30 p.m.
    Why Go: Enjoy an evening of locally sourced and seasonal food paired with local wines at a dinner prepared by The Mooring in partnership with Organic Valley Family Farms and the Chef’s Collaborative. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to Chef’s Collaborative.
    Pricing: $55, not including tax and gratuity; Reservations required.

  • Where/When:
    , Sachuest Point Road, Saturday, April 23 from 9 a.m.
    Why Go:
    The Portsmouth Police Department Unity Team along with the Aquidneck Island National Police Parade hosts its 3rd annual 5K Race. An all ages one-mile fun run starts at 9 a.m. and the 5K starts at 10 a.m. The first 200 pre-entries will receive a free t-shirt.
    Pricing: $20 in advance; $25 day of race.

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m.
    Why Go:  The Newport Recreation Department, Newport Fed, Miller, Scott & Holbrook, Bellevue Gardens Shopping Center, The Newport Daily News, and the Rogers High School National Honor Society will host an egg hunt in which children ages 3 to 7 can hunt for plastic eggs and turn them in for prizes.
    Pricing: Free

  • Where/When:
    on Saturday, April 23 at 1 p.m.
    Why Go: The Newport Tree Society offers two kids' films about the environment as part of their first annual Newport Arboretum Week.
    Pricing: Free; Reservations encouraged.

  • Where/When:
    on Sunday, April 24 from 12 to 2 p.m.
    Why Go:  Hop on over to the carousel to take a ride with the Easter Bunny. Bring your camera for a photo op with the big guy.  
    Pricing: $1 per ride.
