Get Out: Garden Party, Dinner with Sen. Whitehouse and Gulls Opening Night

A roundup of the best bets in and around Middletown for the weekend of June 10-12.


  • Where/When: Cardines Field on Friday, June 10 at 6:35 p.m.
    Why Go:  Newport’s home team will play against the North Shore Navigators in their season opening game.
    Pricing: $4/adults; $2/senior or military and children ages 13-18; $1/children under 12

  • Where/When:
    St. Columba’s Chapel on Saturday, June 11 from 1 to 5 p.m.
    Why Go:  This traditional English Garden Party will feature something for everyone including pony rides, a plant and garden sale, Barbershop Quartet performances, balloon animals, a bake sale, silent auction, raffle and much more. A traditional tea with scones and Devonshire cream will be served along with a children’s tea with a feature presentation by Pow! Science.

  • Where/When:
    J.H. Gaudet Middle School on Sunday, June 12 from 5 to 7 p.m.
    Why Go:  Head over to GMS on Sunday evening for dinner with Senator Sheldon Whitehouse. He's hosting the dinner as part of a listening tour to hear from the community about their concerns, as well as ideas on how to make the state and country better.

  • Where/When:
    Ochre Court on Friday, June 10 from 7 to 11 p.m.
    Why Go:  This benefit for Child & Family Services will kick off with A Style Week Runway Show and an auction of Doris Duke’s personal wardrobe along with a preview sale of the main event on Saturday all while enjoying cocktails and hors d’ouvres.

  • Where/When:
    Newport Art Museum on Friday, June 10 from 5 to 7 p.m.
    Why Go: Head to the art museum to view the newest displays entitled “Trent Burleson: Birds and Other Metaphors,” “China Blue: Firefly Projects” and “Things with Wings” along with “Remembering the Ladies: Women and the Art Association of Newport.”
    Pricing: Free for members; $10 suggested donation for non-members.

  • Where/When:
    Swiss Village Foundation on Saturday, June 11 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
    Why Go:
    Take this once a year opportunity to tour this historic farm that is dedicated to preserving endangered species of livestock. And you’ll get the opportunity to ask the SVF lab, vets, and animal care staff any questions you may have about their endeavor. Admission will be via shuttle to the farm and will be provided free of charge from Fort Adams State Park.
