Islander Girls' Varsity Volleyball Impress in Division 2 Season Opener

The Islanders won straight match sets against the Tigers of Fatima.

The Middletown High School Islander Varsity Volleyball team moved up a division this year, but with a senior lead team, the first game showed they will be a force in the division.

The ladies handed the Tigers of Fatima an impressive defeat 25-11, 25-15 and 25-8 in the best-of-five match.

The Lady Islanders looked extremely solid on both sides of the court, especially on defense. The Lady Islanders were crisp and well organized on offense and sophomore Sam Cornman may prove a headache for opponents this season: With great support from her teammates, Cornman controlled the game with kills and defensive stuffs from the front line.  The middle court and back-line were just as impressive with setting the volley, which in turn provided the defense -to-offense switch to establish the kill for the point.

As good as Middletown looked, Fatima did play solid but was unable get their serves over on a consistant basis, which proved no match for the Lady Islanders' strong defense, pristine offensive sets, digs from the back court, and kills from the front-line.

By the third match, Fatima looked like they were coming together leading 3-2 until the Lady Islanders rallied off 11 consecutive points to finish the game in 45 minutes.

The Lady Islanders roster is lead by 12 seniors which could prove to be a strong point come playoff time. Lead by Coach Karen Massaro, this veteran team of seniors stands a very good chance to contend in the tougher Division Two.
