Islander Tim Furman Nominated for Cox Winter Sports-Scholar Award
The Middletown High School junior has excelled on the swim team and in the classroom.
Of the dozens of nominees in the running for the Cox Rhode Island Winter Sports Awards, only one athlete stands among them—swimmer .
Furman, a junior, has competed and excelled in races that include the 200 meter medley relay, 100 butterfly, 100 backstroke, and 400 freestyle.
From the fall sports program, MHS football standout and Super Bowl MVP Rico McCray was also previously nominated.

The nominees were announced Thursday, March 31 for the 2010-2011 Winter Scholar-Athlete nominees, with winners to be revealed at the fifth annual Cox Rhode Island Sports Awards presented by the Rhode Island National Guard in June at the Rhode Island Convention Center.
Cox Sports and the RI National Guard will honor the state’s best scholar-athletes from Woonsocket to Westerly and the top college athletes at the Cox RI Sports Awards, according to the press release issued Thursday. The Ocean State’s best high school scholar-athletes from each sport for every season, as well as the Team of the Year and Coach of the Year, will be announced.

State Championship teams from each season will also be honored--including Middletown's varsity football and girls basketball state championship teams.
A highlight show of the awards dinner will be broadcast on Cox Sports.
