Islanders Win One, Lose One In The Pool
Middletown High School hosted Cranston East Thursday night in the pool at the Newport County YMCA in Middletown.
The night in the pool started off great for the Islanders' girls swim team, placing first and third in the first event of the meet, the 200-Meter Medley Relay with a time of 2:19.36. With a quick 7-3 lead over , the Islanders continued to build their lead with wins in the the next two events, the 200 Freestyle and 200 Individual Medley. After three events the girls extended their lead to seven points, 16-9.
The turning point occurred in the next two events, the 50 Freestyle, in which the Islanders placed third while took the first and second spots earning them a total of seven points to Middletown's one. That allowed the Thunderbolts to pull within one point, 17-16. The second of the two, the 100 Butterfly, ended with the Islanders being disqualified, resulting in zero points and the Thunderbolts earning four, now putting them ahead of the Islanders 17-20. That would be the last time the Islanders would see the lead, losing overall 36-53.
The Islanders' boys team started the night similar to the girls' team, winning the first four events — 200 Medley Relay, 200 Freestyle, 200 Individual Medley and the 50 Freestyle. The boys held a solid 20-14 lead following four events.

The lead slowly diminished in the following three events, 100 Butterfly (2nd), 100 Freestyle (3rd) and the 500 Freestyle (2nd), giving the boys from Cranston East the 27-31 lead. The Islanders refused to quit, tying the matchup through the next two events, 34-34 and 38-38. With two final events remaining, the Islanders dominated the 100 Breaststroke by placing first and second, earning seven points to Cranston's one.
With a six-point lead going into the final relay, the Islanders placed second, earning them three points to Cranston's seven, giving the Islanders a two point, hard fought overall victory, 48-46.

MHS swim teams will next compete Monday Dec. 20, against Rogers High School. This meet will take place at the Girls & Boys Club of Newport County at 7 p.m.
