It's Elementary: STEAM Education has More Power at Early Grades!

There is lots of buzz around STEAM. The hidden, rarely discussed opportunity is to use it at the elementary grade levels to jump start lifelong interest in math and science. A group of Newport and Middletown residents have taken on the challenge.

We’d like to share some good news with our many Patch friends. On Monday, March 31, 2014 we delivered a formal proposal to launch the Rhode Island STEAM Academy to RIDE’s Office of Transformation & Charter Schools.  If approved,  RISA would open in the Middletown-Newport area as a Grade K-1 in 2015, growing one grade each year through Grade 6.

Founding group members have spent hundreds of hours since last Summer researching, writing, and consulting with experts on delivering a rigorous and relevant STEAM foundational curriculum to our earliest learners.

We invite readers to review our Executive Summary, available at bit.ly/RISAExecutive which sheds light on our novel approach.  Please click on the “Comments” button on the top right corner of the GoogleDocs page and share your thoughts and questions.

Once RIDE has reviewed the entire proposal for completeness, it will be posted on their website. At that time, the dates for the formal public hearings will be announced. We look forward to hearing from you.
