Lady Islanders Girls Soccer Ties Season Opener

Middletown High School's Lady Islanders tie with the West Warwick Wizards in the first game of the season.

The Middletown High School Lady Islanders Varsity Soccer team kicked off the season with a 0-0 tie Thursday night against the West Warwick Wizards.

There were many positives throughout the course of the twilight.  The Lady Islanders dominated the field almost to frustatration standards as shots on goal were 13-1 and two of the shots rattled the post in the first half, off of sophomore sensation Chelsea Dowlers' right leg.

The Islanders spent the entire night in the offensive zone as the Wizards defense continuously held the everlasting offensive.  If not for a few goals that were called back due to two offsides calls, and one call that stopped play on an interference call that would have put Dowlers' first goal of the season in the books, the Islanders would have walked away with the win.

The Wizards of West Warwick continuously stopped the Islanders offense but could not stem any offense past midfield.  Once the Islanders get more communication and the midfield starts to work on close passing, which comes with a little season, the Lady Islanders look to have a very positive season ahead of them.

The midfield brought some excitement when midfielder Riley Smith featured a second half bicycle kick to start the offensive for the Islanders.

All night the Lady Islanders were swarming the net and within a few inches the season opener would have ended with a win.

Coach Dave Kolator will be able to bring many positives for the season to next practice, and when the team gets a bit more mileage on the field at the next away match on the 14th against Cranston East, the overall season perspective will start to come into more focus.

The Islanders are lead by senior captains Taylor O'Malley (Goal Keeper), mid-fielders Emily Daughan and Kirsten Perry.  Chelsea Dowler looked many times to get her first goal of the season and did capitalize with five shots on goal, one which hit the post.

The Islanders next game is September 14, away at Cranston East.
