MHS 2011 Playoffs: Girls Softball Team Wins Opener Against Burrillville

The Islanders entered the first round of the playoffs and saw Grace Eng pitch another gem, as they took it to a scrappy Burrillville team, defeating them 3-0 and advancing to the next round.

The Softball Team had a stellar regular season, finishing 15-3 overall and earning a No.3 seed in the 2011 playoffs.

They showed why they are a top seed on Thursday afternoon as No.1 starter took the mound for the Islanders against Burrillville and once more pitched on a level few can. Allowing a scant few hits over seven innings, she helped her team keep Burrillville at bay long enough for the Islanders to rattle off a few runs and defeat the Broncos 3-0 to advance to the second round of the playoffs.

The first round of the softball tournament is single elimination, so the stakes couldn't be higher, and the Islanders did what they do.  hey banded together, the played as a team, they backed each other up on the field and in the dugout, and most importantly, they got the hits and the runs when they needed them most.

Scoring one run in the second and two in the fourth proved to be just enough for Grace Eng to work with.

Grace is beyond impressive to watch on the mound. Focus? Check. Pitch selection? Check. One of the most dominating starting pitchers in all of varsity softball? You better believe it.

Final score was 3-0 in favor of the home team Islanders.

The Islander "unit" continued to do what they do best. Win and win as a team. Head Coach Robin Ramey collected her team in a circle in the outfield after the game as she does every game, win or lose. This game they won. It puts them in the next round of the 2011 playoffs, which becomes double elimination.

With the MHS Boys Baseball team losing a heartbreaker to North Kingstown Thursday night and now eliminated from the Final Four tournament, the Islander Softball Team is now the lone Middletown team left standing in the postseason.

How far can they go? It’s up to all up to them. If this team wants a State Championship, they'll get one. It is all up to them.
