MHS Boys Baseball Squad Loses at Home, Falls In Division

South Kingstown visited Middletown on Wednesday and left with control of third place in Division I South.

It's coming down to the wire in Middletown. The Islanders Varsity Baseball Team hosted South Kingstown High in a Divisional battle that saw the two teams enter the game tied for third place in Division I South, and ended with SK beating the Islanders 4-1 to take sole possession of third place.

The game started out with SK jumping all over Middletown's starting pitcher, Matt Sullivan, who didn't have a bad day on the mound, but couldn't get enough run support from his teammates to secure a victory.

SK scored two in the first, 1 in the second and one more in the third to take a 4-0 lead heading into the fourth inning. Matt Sullivan eventually settled in, but it was too late. Even though the Middletown pitching staff didn't allow a run after the third, their bats couldn't heat up enough to take the game from SK.

The Islanders did start a rally in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run, but it was too little too late. SK shut the door on the Islander charge and the game was over.

Final score was 4-1 in favor of the visitors.

With the loss the Islanders drop to (8-6) in Division I South play and (8-7) overall on the year. The loss also gave SK control of third place. Middletown has four games left on the season. Two are against opponents with less than stellar records, Portsmouth(5-8) and Tiverton(4-10), but the Islanders also face the top two teams in the Division, East Greenwich(11-3) and powerhouse first place North Kingstown(12-2)

The first of the remaining four games will be played against the aforementioned NK, at Lischio Field, on Friday the 13th. This is an opportunity for the Islanders to rebound from a tough loss, and prove their Division I mettle, on the road against arguably the best team in Rhode Island.

Assistant Coach Mike Yates, when asked about his teams playoff prospects as of now said, "We're right in the middle of the pack right now. We need a couple big wins to finish up the year. We've got a huge game at NK, so we'll see what happens."

It's up to the Islanders at this point to decide how bad they want to play beyond May 21.

This is the place to be to find out how it all unfolds.
