Middletown Beats Bishop Keough, Record Stands at 20-0

With Tuesday night's victory and two games left in the season, the Middletown High School girls basketball team remains the only undefeated overall team in Rhode Island.

The girls basketball team has already locked up the Number 1 seed in their division and a first round bye in the upcoming playoffs, even before the start of Tuesday night's game against Bishop Keough High School.

For all intents and purposes, this game does not mean anything.

Try telling that to the captains of this team. Try telling that to every member of this team.

The Islanders entered Tuesday night's game as the only undefeated overall team in Rhode Island. They left their home court with that overall record intact. Easily defeating Bishop Keough at home, 35-19.

The first half didn't start off very well for the visiting team. Middletown ran fast and furious. They passed fast and scored faster.  They took charge early, leading 13-1 after 12 minutes of first half play.

In fact, Bishop Keough didn't score until there was 3:20 left in the half. Middletown finished the half with a commanding 18-5 lead over the visiting Bishop Keough squad.

The second half saw the visitors come out with a little more pizazz than they displayed in the first.

Middletown was just too powerful underneath and especially defensively. Nina Tragila, Taylor O'Malley, Kirsten Perry and Michaela Conley brought on multiple turnovers and countless moments of frustration for the visiting team.

The defensive play of the game came from the aforementioned Michaela Conley.  #55 blocked a shot from a Bishop Keough player that was more than half a foot taller than her. This electrified her teammates and simultaneously deflated Bishop Keough, who mailed the rest of their game in.

Middletown went on to win the game by a final score of 35-19.

The Islanders are now 20-0 overall on the season.

They have two more games left on their regular season schedule.

First up is their visit to Central High School on Tuesday Feb. 22. Tip-off for that game is at 2 p.m.

They will wrap up their regular season at home on senior night, when they host Davies Career and Technical High School on Feb. 24 at 7 p.m.

The Islanders certainly have something magical going on. Can they finish the regular season undefeated?

Two games left. Two tough opponents. Check back next Tuesday after the game for part one of the two-part season finale.
