EAST GREENWICH -- East Greenwich’s returning Division II Championship boy's lacrosse team started off the 2013 season with two big wins this past week. The Avengers kicked off the season on Tuesday against the Middletown Islanders under the watchful eye of a small home-town crowd braving cold temperatures in support of the team. Offense was on target in the first half, with goals scored by Captain Sam Feinberg, Alex White, Joe Madden, and Captain Matt Cruise, and another two points by Colin Bernier. The Islanders answered with one goal by Turano resulting in an Avenger 6:1 lead at the half. Although Middletown came back with two goals in the third quarter by Mazzulli and Coogan, their efforts weren’t enough when combined with EG’s three additional points by Brenier, Colin Waitkun, and Madden. The final score was 9 EG, 3 Middletown.
“We’re a new team this year ... and are learning to mesh,” said Avenger's Coach Trapani after the Middletown game. He noted that the team, which has come on strong after two weeks of solid training, has also benefited from the extra work done by team members in the off season.
The Avenger’s offense proved nearly unstoppable again on Thursday night against the Prout Crusaders. Prout scored first with a goal by Charles Baetjer about 4 minutes into the game, but that was all the Crusaders were able to get past EG’s defense. The Avengers came back with one goal in the first quarter by Bernier, followed in the second quarter with two goals scored by Ben Contreras, and one each by White and Waitkun. The offense continued to dominate in the second half with goals by Bernier, Cruise, Ross Trinque, and Waitkun. EG walked off the field with a 9-1 win.
