Middletown Defeats Rogers 3-1 on Senior Night

The Middletown varsity hockey squad beat the Rogers Co-op team in front of a packed rink at St. George's School on Saturday night, putting MHS in a virtual first place tie with Portsmouth.

defeated the Rogers co-op Hockey team, which also includes students from Tiverton and Rocky Hill, on Saturday at  arena.

It was senior night for all the schools playing, and in a moving ceremony before the game, the senior players skated from their bench to greet their parents and loved ones on the ice. Some cried, some cheered, all smiled. The kids were happy too. 

The Middletown spirit was in full force on Saturday, as fans and fellow Middletown athletes donned "war paint" in Middletown's recognizable blue and white. They filled the seats and lined the glass as the puck was dropped to start the game.

Rogers wasted no time and struck first, scoring at the 8:28 mark of the first period. The goal came from senior Lu Leys, with assists from  Sanford and Tierney.

Middletown scored a short time later with a goal by #22 Jared Dugan, assisted by Jake Armstrong and Harrison Coogan.

The two teams banged against the boards for the remainder of the first.

The score was tied at the end of the first period.  1-1.

The second period was all defense by the two squads.  Both goalies played extremely well through two periods.  There was some heavy action against the boards which caused a few short delays in the game.  The two teams eventually settled down and went back to work.

At the end of the second period the score was still tied 1-1.

The Islanders took over the game offensively in the third period.  Ian Larcom scored a power play goal at the 3:57 mark, assisted by Kevan Sullivan, putting Middletown up 2-1 over Rogers.  

The Rogers squad fought hard to get back into the game, but couldn't get the puck past Middletown's goalie, Bennett Coogan, who only allowed one goal in the entire game.

Rogers pulled their goalie late in the third, and Middletown held their own against the 6 on 5.  

Middletown scored one more time at the 14:55 mark. It was an unassisted goal by #19 Michael Curtis, who scored his 19th goal of the season. The final score was 3-1, in favor of the Islanders.

Middletown is now in a virtual first place tie with Portsmouth High.  The coming week will see the final pieces of the upcoming playoff picture fall into place.

The Middletown High School hockey team will play their final regular season game against South Kingstown on Friday, Feb. 25 at "The Boss" rink at URI.

The puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m.
