Middletown Girls Softball Team Posts 5-1 Win Over Narragansett
Behind a stellar pitching performance from co-captain Brittany Lewis, the MHS Islanders beat the Mariners on Monday afternoon, staying undefeated.
Middletown High School Head Coach Robin Ramey stresses to her team a mantra that is repeated every game. "We play pitch to pitch, inning to inning, game to game. Every inning I tell my team the score is 0-0, no matter what. Every game I tell them our record is 0-0."
You can see the team carry out that philosophy on a regular basis. You can hear them after every inning.
Ramey will ask her team, "What's the score?" The team will yell in unison "zero zero." She does this no matter if Middletown is up 4-0, or down 4-0.

The Islanders traveled to Narragansett High School in a divisional matchup against the Mariners on Monday afternoon, a perfect day for spring softball.
The sun shined on co-captain Brittany Lewis as well, pitching a two-hit complete game shutout against Narragansett. The only run for the Mariners came on an errant throw to the plate.

The game started off as a pitcher's duel. There was no score through two innings. In the top of the third, the Islanders pounded in two and Lewis shut down the Mariners in the bottom half to take the early 2-0 lead.
Lewis continued to mow down Narragansett for the remainder of the game. She finished the day with nine strikeouts on her way to the complete game shutout against their Division II South rival.
The Islanders added three more runs in the later innings, and Narragansett got on the board in the seventh, after a wild throw from the Islanders. Lewis finished off the Mariners to secure the win and the team gathered together by the dugout after shaking hands with the Mariners, and Coach Ramey asked her team...
"What's our record?"
"Zero and zero!" the team yelled.
Grace Eng, Glenn Murphy, Lauren Paiva, and Chelsea Dowler were among the offensive highlights for Middletown on Monday.
After the game, I spoke with co-captain Brittany Lewis to get her thoughts on her complete game shutout, and whether or not she thought about the shutout at any point. "Not really. I don't even know what inning it is when I go out there. I just go out and take it one batter at a time."
I followed that question up by asking if, being a senior, she has thought about her high school career coming to and end soon? "Um, yeah, it's basically the reason I go to school."
With the victory, the Islanders move to (5-0) in their Division, and (6-0) overall. They remain in first place in Division II South, and with five of their six overall wins coming against the other teams in their division, are in prime position to make a serious run at the #1 seed as they continue their 2011 quest for a State Title.
The Islanders return home for their next game on Thursday to take on Mt. Hope. First pitch is 4 p.m. at Middletown High School.
