Middletown High School Girls Lacrosse Team Defeats Narragansett for Hold On Second Place

In a battle for second place, Islander sophomore Zoe Mazzulli led the Islanders with 3 goals in a 14-7 victory.

After losing a heartbreaker on the road to Portsmouth on Monday, the Middletown High School Islanders Girls Lacrosse Team returned to their home turf at Gaudet Field on Wednesday, to take on the Narragansett "Mariners" in a divisional matchup that saw the winner walk away with sole possession of second place in the tightly contested Division II South.

The Islanders exploded early, taking a dominant 8-1 lead in the first half.  Narragansett looked slow and confused by the Islander attack.  The result saw Middletown put eight in the net going into halftime.

The Islanders took that 8-1 lead into the intermission.

One doesn't know exactly what was said by the Narragansett coaches, or if it was the team itself that looked up at the scoreboard, maybe it was both, but the Mariners came out locked and loaded at the start of the second half. Galvanized by senior Captain Kiani Carroll's five goals, Narragansett saw an 8-1 deficit turn into a hotly contested 10-6 battle.

The Islanders didn't falter. Head coach Megan Lawler called a timeout and settled her team down.

After the timeout, the Islanders resumed their offensive attack from the first half. Narragansett scored six second half goals before the Islanders fought back with ferocity, going on a 4-0 run to end the game.

The final score was 14-7. Narragansett had battled back big, but could not match the offensive firepower from Middletown.

The Islanders offense came from sophomore Zoe Mazzulli, who had three goals. Kindred Lowman also pitched in three of her own. Stephanie Stevens had two on the afternoon.  Kirsten Perry, Liza Wauters, Tessa Kennedy, Jaya Petrie, Angie Phrasavath and Jackie Cleasy each had a goal a piece.

Senior Captain Taylor "Tina" O'Malley got the victory in the net with 16 saves.

Narragansett saw an overly impressive 5 goal performance from senior Captain, #15, Kiani Carroll go by the wayside. The Mariners fall to 3-2 in the division and now sit in third place behind Middletown, who with the victory, move to 4-2 in the tight Division II South, a game behind Portsmouth High School.

The Mariners will play next on Monday, April 25, when they host Warwick Vets. Start time is scheduled for 4 p.m.

The Islanders are scheduled to next play on Wednesday, April 27, when they travel to Westerly High. That game starts at 4 p.m.

The Islanders are nearing the halfway mark of the 2011 season. In second place they are primed to make a solid run at the postseason. Can they keep it going? Check back Wednesday to find out.
