Middletown Public Schools Present International Festival, NECAP Community Forum

A look at what's happening in and around Middletown today.

International food and dance. Poetry. Lifelong learning. Compassion in action. It's all here for Middletowners on this Thursday:

  1. The flavors of the world are yours for the offering. Beginning at 6 p.m. tonight, the Middletown High School’s International Festival presents art, performing arts, food and a salsa contest. Click here to find out if the latter pertains to a saucy condiment, Latin dance, or both.
  2. There was a time when someone heard “kneecap” and thought of Tonya Harding. Today, we think "standardized testing" and tonight's NECAP Community Forum at 6 p.m. will help the public better understand the latest results of these mysterious performance-based tests now required of Middletown's students.
  3. Have you ever wondered what it might be like first-hand to have a disability? Sponsored in part by the Middletown-based Looking Upwards Foundation, today's Barrier Awareness Day from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the International Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport seeks to help bridge compassion and understanding.
  4. Looking for the poetry in your life? Tonight from 6 to 8 p.m., Learning Unlimited from Salve Regina University and the Ocean State Poets will share the stage as part of local Disability Awareness Week activities.
  5. Middletown’s newest community Zumba class is on the move. The Middletown Public Schools Community Extensions program has moved the 6 p.m. Wednesday night class to the Forest Avenue School Gym effective immediately.
