'moe-rons' Primed To Enjoy An Evening With moe at Yachting Center

The Newport Yachting Center will host moe tonight, July 14.

Playing to a sold out crowd when they last hit the stage back in 2007, “An Evening with moe” scheduled for next Thursday, July 14th promises to once again attract the band’s hardcore fans affectionately known as ‘moe-rons’.

Getting the music started on the smaller, Courtyard Stage will be folk singer-songwriter, G.W. Mercure, from Providence, RI. (There is no opening act for the 7:00 p.m. show as moe intends to play an extended concert.) Tickets are still available at $30 for standard seats and $45 for preferred seats and those interested can purchase and print tickets at home by visiting www.newportwaterfrontevents.com or by calling the Newport Yachting Center Box Office at (401) 846-1600.

From modest beginnings in a Buffalo basement over two decades ago to being a favorite of the jam band and improvisational rock scene, moe has continued to keep a refreshingly unpretentious attitude which has won them a devoted legion of dedicated fans ranging from seasoned concert-goers to eager young newcomers.

Along the way, moe has toured with the 1997 Further Festival, appeared at Woodstock ’99, played Summerstage at the Rumsey Playfield in Central Park, opened for the Allman Brothers and The Who, performed at Radio City Music Hall on New year’s Eve in 2006 and 2007 and performed at the Bonnaroo Music Festival 5 times between 2002 and 2009.

In the studio, moe’s release of Wormwood in 2003 was an experiment in combining live tracks with studio manipulation that paid off with critical acclaim and four-stars in Blender Magazine. The band followed that recording up with The Conch in 2007, which took the next logical step in exploring this unorthodox, albeit successful, approach. Rolling Stone gave the album a four-star rating and described it as “rolling turbulence with twin tangled spikes of guitar.” The group's signature extends to vocals too as Rob Derhak, Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey easily trade the role of lead singer with contrasting styles -- and a balanced quality.

Most recently, the band tackled its greatest hits package, Smash Hits Vol. 1, with typical irreverence and innovation. An informal poll of the group’s most popular songs was conducted with the band members, their wives and management. What initially began as a collection of pre-existing recordings slowly mutated to a collection that includes eight new recordings.

“We heard from a lot of the ‘moe-rons’, as moe fans like to be called, that they wanted to see them back at our venue,” said Michele Maker Palmieri, General Manager of the Newport Yachting Center. “moe packed the place a couple years ago and we can’t wait to hear them jamming on the Newport waterfront again.“ Palmieri added that concert-goers can expect moe to play at least an hour longer than what is typical for most traditional bands.
