Newport Woman Charged with Drug Offenses & Receiving Stolen Goods

Middletown police arrested a 36-year-old Newport woman for narcotics possession and other offenses. Her passenger also faces charges.

MIDDLETOWN, RI—Sheyliz Nevarez, 36, of Newport, was arrested on April 5 after police stopped her car at 11:07 a.m. on Valley Road near the Newport County Mental Health Center. According to a patrol officer, he ran the plates when he saw the car traveling south on Valley Road. The check indicated the driver's registration had been suspended because the vehicle had not been inspected.

Nevarez's driver license was also suspended, and she was wanted by police in Central Falls and in Pawtucket. Police searched her and allege they found a syringe containing heroin. She was given field sobriety tests but declined to take a chemical test. Police also allege she had check books belong to an uncle who said he had not given her permission to take his checks.

She was charged with felony drug possession and with two misdemeanors, one for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol and the other for receiving stolen goods. She was also cited for two traffic violations: Driving after her license was revoked or suspended and Refusal to submit to a chemical test.
