Obituary: Ruth Marie Gros, 92

Ruth Marie Gros, 92, of Middletown, RI, died Thursday, December 4, 2014 at the St. Clare Home in Newport. She was the wife of the late Lesley A. Gros.

Born in Newport, RI on June 13, 1922, to the late Earl E. and Marie (O’Neill) Carr, and the sister to the late Richard J. Carr.

From the age of 2-5 years, Ruth lived with her family on Little Gull Lighthouse on Long Island Sound. The family then moved to South East Lighthouse on Block Island, RI, where Earl Carr was one of the keepers. Ruth graduated from Block Island High School in 1941, and then attended R.I. School of Design in Providence, on scholarship.

The family moved to Newport at the beginning of WWII, and Ruth worked at the Torpedo Station and Newport Hospital. She met her husband, Lesley when he was stationed in Newport. They married in 1944.

After working at Transcom Electronics, Ruth and her husband retired from Raytheon Corp. in 1984.

She was the mother of the late Carol Gros Carlen, and is survived by her daughter Barbara Gros Holloway, her granddaughter Meghan Wiley, and great grandsons Jordan and Darien Wiley, all of Martinsburg, West Virginia. She also leaves many loving family members and friends.

Visiting hours will be held from 3-5 pm on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014, from the O’Neill-Hayes Funeral Home, 465 Spring St., Newport. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 at St. Mary’s Church, Spring St., Newport at 9 am. Burial will follow at Trinity Cemetery, East Main Road, Portsmouth. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Ruth’s memory to the St. Clare Home, 309 Spring Street, Newport, RI 02840.
