Portsmouth Man Arrested After Argument Over a Fender Bender

Marvin W. Clements, 68, of Portsmouth, rear-ended a car by the Shell Station at the corner of Valley and East Main roads, police allege.

MIDDLETOWN, RI—Marvin Clements, 68, of Portsmouth, was charged with Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, refusal to submit to a chemical test and leaving the scene of an accident, police said.

He allegedly bumped into another car near the Shell gas station near the corner of East Main and Valley roads and fled. The other driver called police.

Portsmouth police went to Clements' home, and the Middletown officer arrived later to interview him. Clements allegedly told the officer he left the scene because he had "barely touched" the other car and because he'd had a few beers.

Police conducted field sobriety tests and ultimately charged him with drunken driving and cited him for not reporting the accident.
