In the Cold Firefighters Respond to Purgatory Road Garage Fire

Firefighters went to a burning garage on Purgatory Road on Monday night.

MIDDLETOWN, RI— No one was hurt Monday night in a garage fire that sparked at 197 Purgatory Road around 8 p.m.

According to Fire Marshal Robert McCall, the cause was accidental. A homeowner was working on a snow blower, and gas vapor ignited when he dropped a work light.

The fire department received the call at 7:56 p.m. and sent four engines, one ladder truck and three command cars.

It took approximately 20 minutes to put out the fire, he said. The fire did not involve the home.

"The garage itself is pretty well damaged," he said, and all the contents were burned up. The structure will need repairs.
