Rebels Girls Fall To Middletown

The South Kingstown High softball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Middletown High at Broad Rock Middle School.

South Kingstown High sophomore Taylor Gordon and Middletown High senior Grace Eng treated the fans on hand at the to a great pitchers’ duel Tuesday in fast pitch softball action.

Both Gordon and Eng allowed four hits over seven innings, with Eng striking out 10 batters and Gordon striking out six.

Unfortunately for Gordon and the Rebels, it was when the Islanders unleashed their four hits that ultimately gave Middletown the 3-0 victory over South Kingstown.

“They made a couple more plays when it mattered,” South Kingstown head coach Joel Tuoni said.  “We had a few base running blunders which took us out of some innings, but they made some good plays.  They’re a good team.”

The Islanders did all of their damage in the fifth inning, with Gordon unable to get out of a bases loaded jam with one out.

Freshman Megan Tessier was able to get the game-winning RBI by drawing a walk with the bases full, fighting off a tough three-two pitch from Gordon to get the fourth ball on the next pitch.

“We were on her the whole game, it was just that we were just missing it,” Middletown head coach Robin Ramey said.  “Once we were able to adjust a little bit I think we were able to get to them.”

Junior Glenn Murphy then broke it open for the Islanders, plating seniors Emily Tessier and Kaitlyn Eggeman on a single up the middle.

“I think they got one hit in the inning, but that’s part of it,” Tuoni said.  “These are some of the learning curves that we have to go through.”

That would be more than enough for Eng, who despite allowing one base runner in each of the last three innings, never allowed the Rebels an opportunity to tie the game.

“Grace pitches with a lot of confidence no matter what the count is, whatever pitch was called she hit her spots,” Ramey said.  “It just seems like she has no fear whatsoever.”

The Islanders (4-0 Division-I South, 5-0 overall) will look to remain unbeaten when they take on North Kingstown High Saturday at 1:30 p.m. in a non-league game at Ryan Park.

South Kingstown (2-3 D-II South, 2-3 overall) will host St. Raphael Academy Thursday at 4 p.m. at Broad Rock in its next game.

“Another hit or two here and there and we’ll be in good shape,” Tuoni said.  “We’ve just got to come out ready to go.”
