Rebels Put 6 Between the Pipes to Defeat the Islanders

The Middletown High School boys hockey team got off to a good start against South Kingstown, but SK took over the game in the third, beating the Islanders at The Boss Arena Friday night.

The boys hockey team had a tough night at the Boss Arena in Kingston on Friday night. It was senior night for their opponent, the South Kingstown Rebels and emotions might have helped propel them to a dominating 6-2 win over the Middletown squad.

The MHS Islanders got on the board first when #9 Ian Larcom scored a power play goal at the 12:35 mark of the first. South Kingstown put one between the pipes six minutes later, tying the game at one goal a piece.

The Rebels scored another goal a few minutes later, and had a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period.

The Islanders started the second period skating fast and quickly scored with a goal by #8 Ian Godin.  The Islanders looked reenergized after the goal and seemed poised to capture the momentum swing and take back the lead from SK.

South Kingstown had other plans, and added another goal in the second to take a 3-2 lead with 6:45 remaining in the second.

The Islanders and the Rebels banged against the boards and SK held onto the lead at the end of the second period, still up 3-2.

The Islanders were then the victims of an offensive explosion by the Rebels, who went on to score three unanswered goals in the third, all of them coming in a one-minute span. They essentially knocked the wind out of Middletown and sealed the victory, winning by a final score of 6-2.

Each team had 31 shots on goal, but the Islanders just couldn't match the goal output of the Rebels.

This was the final regular season game for Middletown. They have clinched a playoff spot already, but now must wait and see where they will end up in the seeding for the upcoming postseason.

That will all unfold over the next couple days and we will provide an update as soon as it becomes available.
