RI CHURCHES TO JOIN NATIONAL OBSERVANCE OF NEWTOWN, CT ANNIVERSARY

Channing Memorial Unitarian Church, 135 Pelham Street in Newport will participate in the First Anniversary observance of the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, CT.  People are encouraged to meet at the church at 9:15 AM for a gathering to honor the 26 lives lost at Newtown and the thousands lost every year in America to gun violence.  The church’s bells will ring for one minute beginning at 9:35 AM, joining more than 50 other such events in at least 35 states nationwide.  Other Newport County churches where bells will be rung include the Chapel at Salve Regina University, St. Joseph’s Church in Newport and Holy Cross Church in Portsmouth.  Approximately 20 houses of worship in Rhode Island will take part in the solemn memorial.
