Suspect Stole to Buy Dying Partner's Medication, Police Allege

Daniel A. Childs, 48, of Middletown, was charged with a felony. He allegedly stole cash he was supposed to deposit for his employer.

MIDDLETOWN, RI—Daniel A. Childs, 48, of Middletown, was charged Dec. 23 at 5:35 p.m. with larceny over $1,500, a felony.

According to police, he was a manager for the Dollar Tree store and was supposed to deposit money at the Citizens Bank. However, he allegedly stole three deposits on Dec. 14, 17 and 18. The total came to $4,648.97.

The store's Regional Asset Protection Manager contacted Middletown police and said he had obtained a statement from Childs.

Childs turned himself into Middletown police later the same day.

He allegedly told police his partner is dying and had to change to a medication, which the insurance would not cover. With the medical bills mounting, he took the money "with the intention" of repaying it, he allegedly told officers.
