Texas Dogs & Cats To Arrive At T.F. Green On Thursday

The animals were in shelters in Beaumont, Texas, and are being relocated to Potter League to make room for Hurricane Harvey pets.

MIDDLETOWN, RIβ€”The Humane Society of the U.S. will fly some 20 homeless dogs and 20 cats into T.F. Greene Airport on Thursday, according to the Potter League for Animals. Best guess on the arrival was after 5 p.m., Potter League said Wednesday. The transport is coming from Beaumont, Texas, which was hard hit by Hurricane Harvey. However, these pets had been surrendered to the shelter before the disaster. They're being moved now to make room for animals lost or displaced in the hurricane in the hope they can be reunited with their families.

Similar transports have happened in other parts of the country as well as in Rhode Island. A Westerly shelter, for example, welcomed a Texas transport earlier this week.

β€œWe are always here to help animals in need and are happy that we can play a part in giving some relief to our friends in Texas,” said Brad Shear, executive director of the Potter League. β€œThe Potter League has been a part of a national network of animal shelters for decades and we all help each other when the need arises.”

The dogs and cats will need to be in isolation for five days as Rhode Island State law requires. They will be ready for adoption in about a week, pending medical and behavioral assessments.
