Tufts Learns from Potter League, Christmas Trees Arriving, and Where To Get Last-Minute Holiday Fixings

Whether you are looking to start decking the halls, learn from Ina, pick up a game of basketball, or to catch a free flick, there's much going on about town this week.

  • Students from the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medinicine and Center for Animals and Public Policy visited the on Saturday where Executive Director Christie Smith gave them a tour of the facility. The students are participants of a program at Tufts University that focuses on shelter medicine and the special care that shelter animals need. Smith says, "They were at the Potter League to learn more about our shelter's unique design features to minimize stress in the animals, to hear about our behavior and training programs, and see the green features of the Potter League's facility."
  • The Turkey hasn't even hit the table yet, but Christmas trees and greens have started arriving at the local garden stores. We spotted a delivery of trees at both and the . Sweet Berry Farm also has some wreaths available for purchase and people are welcome to tag their tree in the fields.
  • The road closure on Miantonomi Avenue has once again been extended. It is now expected to go through Tuesday, Nov. 23. Expect delays, closures and uneven pavement between West Main Road and the Boulevard for road, sidewalk and sewer work between 7:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. Local traffic may be detoured to Boulevard or Vernon Ave. Truck traffic will be detoured to Route 114/138. Residents of Miantonomi Avenue and the side streets will not be affected.
  • Last week kicked off the beginning of the Middletown Men's Pick-up Basketball games at . The games are every Wednesday and Friday evening from 6:00-9:00 p.m. through April 1, 2011. Drop into any session.
  • is selling signed copies of Ina Garten's new cookbook, Barefoot Contessa How Easy Is That? The book focuses on recipes that save time and avoid stress which you might want to pick up before planning your holiday entertaining menus.
  • is hosting a movie night Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. They will be showing Pocahontas on their 92" HD projector. Admission is free. The movie is 84 minutes long leaving you plenty of time to grab dinner afterwards.  
  • If you need some last minute fixings for your holiday meal, both and will be closed on Thanksgiving Day, but is open from 8:00 a.m. until noon on Thanksgiving Day.
