Narragansett's Future Is at Stake — Please Vote in the Primaries

Narragansett is facing serious challenges involving infrastructure, climate change, sewage capacity, water supply and water quality. Yet our Town Council continues to support increased building density without, in my view, adequately addressing the environmental and infrastructure consequences.

We also need stronger regulation and enforcement of academic and short-term rentals. When properties are occupied far beyond appropriate limits, it places additional pressure on our water system, water quality, wastewater infrastructure, neighborhoods, congestion, carbon emissions, our landfill, and quality of life.

These concerns are not hypothetical. Communities throughout Rhode Island and across the country are confronting water contamination, sewage problems, drought, and increasingly extreme temperatures. East Providence has experienced sewage-related impacts to coastal waters resulting in their shell fish becoming contaminated with fecal matter, our beaches in RI have had to be shut down due to high coliform bacteria, while communities such as Tiverton have faced concerns over well-water contamination. Across the United States, severe drought has placed enormous stress on water supplies, including the Lake Mead and Lake Powell serving the Colorado River system.

Narragansett is not immune. We already face restrictions on outdoor water use, and concerns about our water quality and supply deserve serious attention. Our water quality in Narragansett is already ranked one of the lowest in the State, and in the Point Judith area they have received multiple notices over the years regarding the potential health risks with their water source. Our wastewater treatment system and other infrastructure have limits, and the consequences are unhealthy for all of us . In North Kingstown, their leaders are fighting against a sludge processing plant, but in Narragansett instead of trying to restrict our building density, the Town Council is adding fuel to the fire by pushing their Build, Baby, Build agenda. We should not wait for a crisis before taking action.

At the same time, we need transparency and consistent enforcement of rental occupancy and zoning regulations—regardless of who owns or manages a property. No elected official or property owner should receive special treatment.

Please vote in the Primaries. Our community needs Town Council leadership that puts infrastructure capacity, water quality and supply, environmental protection, public safety, and the long-term quality of life in Narragansett ahead of unchecked development.

I believe it is time for a change in leadership and for voters to consider replacing the current Town Council majority.
