2.0 Magnitude Earthquake Recorded Near Newport

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the mild earthquake that happened late Sunday night.

NEWPORT, RI — A mild earthquake was recorded near Newport late Sunday night, the U.S. Geological Survey confirmed. The 2.0 magnitude quake happened around 11:45 p.m., about 4 kilometers from the city.

According to information from Michigan Tech's Geological and Mining Engineering and Sciences program, earthquakes with a magnitude of 2.5 or less are not usually felt, though they can be recorded by a seismograph. Approximately 900,000 such earthquakes happen each year.

The strongest earthquake that ever hit Rhode Island also happened in Newport on March 11, 1976, with a magnitude of 3.5.
