3 Firefighters Injured In Fire That Destroys Parts Of Newport Hotel

Another firefighter fell through a hole in a fourth floor hotel room, but did not suffer any injuries, Newport city officials said.

NEWPORT, RI — Three firefighters suffered injuries in a massive fire at the Wayfinder Hotel in Newport on Monday night, according to city officials.

Fire officials were called to the hotel on Admiral Kalbfus Road around 8 p.m., as flames and smoke could be seen billowing from the building for miles. Six fire departments from across Newport, Kent and Washington counties were called to help extinguish the flames.

All hotels guests and employees evacuated the hotel, without suffering injuries, city officials said.

City officials said three firefighters were injured during the fire. Two firefighters sustained shoulder injuries, while another needed stitches on his leg. Another firefighter fell through a hole in a fourth floor hotel room, but did not suffer any injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Crews are still on scene Tuesday morning and access to the property is limited, while they determine if the building is a total loss, officials said.
