50 Rhode Island Clergy Accused Of Sexually Abusing Children

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence released a list of 50 priests "credibly accused" of sex abuse. Nineteen are living; 31 are dead.

The Roman Catholic Diocese of Providence on Monday released a bombshell report detailing every clergy member within the diocese "credibly accused" of sexual abuse of a minor since 1950. In total, 50 names were listed, including 19 living priests and deacons as well as 31 clergy members who are dead.

"As this list is made public, it is our hope that it provides healing and consolation to those who have been harmed and is a sign of our ongoing commitment to transparency and protecting children and youth," the diocese said in a statement.

Bishop Thomas Tobin ordered the release of the list, which was compiled by the diocese's Director of Compliance, a former state police detective, by sifting through decades of old files.

"In some instances, the Director made additional inquiries to corroborate and bolster certain allegations ... [or] consulted the Director of Outreach and Prevention and/or the Diocesan Review Board for further advice," the report said. "In all instances, however, the Director of Compliance ultimately exercised his own independent, expert judgment in determining whether to place particular clergy on the list."
