9-Year-Old Boy Rescued From Drowning At Beach In Newport

The boy stopped breathing and needed CPR, but began breathing on his own again in the ambulance.

NEWPORT, RI — A 9-year-old boy was rescued from a near drowning at a Newport beach Tuesday, city officials said.

Around 2:45 p.m., emergency officials were called to Easton's Beach, after a lifeguard spotted the Swansea boy in the water.

The lifeguard performed CPR on the boy until emergency officials arrived. City officials said the boy was worked on for about five to eight minutes.

City spokesperson Tom Shevlin said the boy was taken to Newport Hospital, but was then transferred to Hasbro's Children's Hospital in Providence, because the boy began breathing on his own in the ambulance.
